A community group is tackling the issues that face Thunder Bay’s less fortunate one person at a time.
Sonya Cahays directs ministry work at the Gathering Place, and admits it seems overwhelming at times with all the people coming through.
“Numerous, different backgrounds… people who’ve immigrated to Canada, the working poor. People who aren’t able to work that are on disability, seniors who are on pensions.”
She points to one woman who overcame drug addiction in the face of what is plaguing this city.
“We walked alongside a woman who was on the meth program. And she is a success story, she is on the other side of not having to be in the meth program. She is not a user anymore.”
Cahays also hopes for greater collaboration with other community groups.
“And certainly with the Regional Food Distribution Association, we want to, as far as the food part of it goes, we want to work together more and have less food banks.”
While she acknowledges there are many challenges facing many people in Thunder Bay, The Gathering Place remains focuses on talking to one person at a time.
This past Saturday was called Day for Caring, in which Acadia Broadcasting helped out by painting the outside steps of the Gathering Place.
