World Class Karate Instruction Locally

Students of the martial arts in Thunder Bay are benefiting from the teachings of a world class instructor.

Albert Mady was in the city recently, recalling success stories such a one student who is now an orthopedic specialist in Toronto.

“He’s a young man that kept (laughs) breaking bones in every testing, and now he’s fixing them. All the Fuchek sisters who have run things up here in Thunder Bay, they’re all teachers.”

The Windsor based martial arts instructor, who has offices globally, has also taught police forces such as the OPP.

Susan Baldassi is a six degree local black belt instructor, and says having Albert Mady teaching in Thunder Bay recently was very inspiring.

“To see that he goes to the DOJO everyday, and he’s hitting the heavy bag, and he’s doing rounds, and he’s rolling around on the ground with the kids teaching them to do break falls. So I think it’s super inspiring.”

She says she’s had Master Mady visit for 35 years, noting what the martial arts has done for people of all ages.

“They start learning the karate, and then they naturally make some changes. They start to eat healthier, they start to become more disciplined with their school work. They start to volunteer or audition for a play, I’ve heard that from parents.”

The local woman notes her father started her in martial arts believing she needed to know self defense.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
