Local students have been learning about the 1930s genocide of millions of Ukrainians at the hands of the Soviet Union.
The last two years the Holodomor National Awareness Tour bus has visited Thunder Bay speaking with students about the genocide.
Tour facilitator Alexi Marchel tells us many people are shocked when they learn about the genocide.
“So many people don’t know what took place in the country and the fact that Stalin took food away from the country starving so many Ukrainians in such a short period of time.”
The facilitator tells us they’ve been teaching at several schools this week.
Marchel notes they also look at the propoganda at the time from Stalin’s government that tried to cover up the genocide.

Tonight the tour bus will be open to the public. You can pay them a visit starting at 3:30 at Superior High School.
The Holodomor was a driving factor for many Ukrainians immigrating to Canada.
