If you have a real Christmas tree it’s a good idea to keep it away from sources of heat and keep it well watered to avoid a fire.
Thunder Bay Fire Spokesperson Anthony Stokaluk admits some people may scoff at their warning, but suggests real trees are a fire hazard.
“As soon as you put a live tree in your home and allow it to dry out, it becomes very hazardous. There’s a million videos floating around online that show how quickly those trees will catch on fire.”
“I can’t say specifically that we’ve ever had a tree fire, but we have a lot of fires over the holiday season.”
Fire officials suggest if you are entertaining over the holidays to encourage smokers to head outdoors and place a non combustible container outside for them to put their butts out.
They add there are some other tips to follow for any big holiday meal.
As long as you have your stove on, firefighters say you should be in the kitchen keeping an eye on your meal.
Stokaluk adds they also want you to be careful while deep-frying turkeys since they pose a fire risk on wood decks.
