One person sent to hospital following house fire on Mathews Street

A Thunder Bay resident was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to a local hospital following a fire at their home on Thursday.

Crews were sent to a fire at a duplex on Mathrew Street after receiving a report of the fire.

The resident was home at the time, and they exited the house before Fire Rescue arrived.

The first arriving fire crew found smoke coming from all openings on the main floor and flames exiting at the back of the building from a kitchen window.

The fire was successfully put out, and the home was searched.

The home sustained extensive damage to the main floor and smoke damage throughout the building.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding members of the public that working smoke alarms and a regularly practiced fire escape plan are essential to ensuring your safety in the event of a fire at your home.
