Thunder Bay City Council implementing new security measures

A new security measure for residents interested in attending Thunder Bay City Council meetings in person.

Moving forward there will be mandatory bag checks for everyone attending.

“This is a proactive step to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone attending Council meetings,” said Director of Legislative Services & City Clerk Krista Power. “We recognize the importance of public participation in local government, and this process is designed to balance security needs while keeping meetings accessible. Signage and notifications will be in place to ensure the public is well-informed about the new process.”

The city’s security provider, Apex Security will manage the bag check process.

Security personnel will inspect bags, including purses, backpacks, and briefcases, at the City Hall entrance before attendees proceed to Council Chambers.

Council meetings are also available online for residents who do not want to consent to a bag search.
