New garbage bins to roll out next week

The city of Thunder Bay says households that have received the new wheeled garbage bins can begin using them on Monday.

The new collection system is automated, using a mechanical arm on the city’s garbage trucks to lift and empty the bins.

Households which have the new bins should refer to the attached flyers for instructions on how to put out their garbage.

Once a household has its new bin, old bins and bags won’t be collected. The city suggests finding other uses for the old non-wheeled bins, such as for storage or rainwater collection.

Residents who want to get rid of their old bins will be able to bring them to the Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Facility from September 29 to October 11. They will find a drop-off location by the administration building parking lot.

About 25% of city residents have new bins so far. The rest of the city can expect to have their bins by next spring.
