The Ford government is being accused of being too slow in building new Thunder Bay District jail.
Northwestern Ontario NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa says too many Indigenous people are dying in the current facility, including his own nephew three weeks ago.
“How many more Indigenous people need to die at the Thunder Bay jail before the government takes action to solve this crisis,” pleaded Mamakwa in the Ontario Legislature.
Soliticitor General Syvia Jones says they will share the findings of a report on Kevin Mamakwa’s death, when it is completed.
Meantime, Jones indicates they have announced and re-announced a new jail in Thunder Bay, and they are in the process of local consulations.
