Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday will be a quiet day south of the border.

That’s because it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is seen as a day to promote equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background.

What’s In A Name?

The day is also combined with other days in different states. For example, Civil Rights Day in both New Hampshire and Arizona in addition to Human Rights Day in Idaho. In Wyoming, the day is known as Wyoming Equality Day. Some other states recognize Robert E Lee’s birthday.

Open And Closed

  • Non-essential government departments are closed, as are many corporations
  • Some schools and colleges close
  • Small companies, such as grocery stores and restaurants, tend to be open although a growing number are choosing to close
  • Public transit systems may or may not operate on their regular schedule

History

Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the “I Have A Dream” speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
