Thunder Bay delaying calendar parking until major snowfall

Thunder Bay’s calendar parking has not been put in place for the year yet.

According to the parking signs it was supposed to go into effect last Friday.

The dates that are on the signs coincide with what’s in the by-law, but there is a provision that if there is not any snow it does not go into effect.

“It will go into effect when we expect our first significant snowfall where plows are required to head out,” said Supervisor of Municipal Parking Services, Jonathan Paske. “The city will make an announcement when we plan to put it in effect.”

Once it goes into effect calendar parking will be enforced until its posted ending date of March 31, unless the city ends it early which would be irregular, but possible.

The main purpose of calendar parking is to help snowplows effectively clear residential areas.

Plowed snow banks also make the road narrower so having cars on one side of the road during the busier portions of the day or when school buses are trying to get down a street is also beneficial.

When you start seeing major snow in the forecast then you can expect calendar parking to go into effect.
