November 19, 1946 – October 12, 2026
Beloved husband of 32 years to Shirley, proud and loving father to Paul (Natalie Buttrey) and step-father to Jennifer Fratpietro (Mike), grandpa to cherished grandchildren Andrew Hookham and Isabella and Tommy Fratpietro, big brother to Bob Hookham and special sister-in-law Linda, brother-in-law to Susan and Larry Novak, Vern and Aida Maronese and Joe and Bev Maronese. Special uncle to Sheena Owen and Ken Hookham. Many other family members are left to mourn his loss.
Greg was born in Fort William and attended F.W.C.I. and Lakehead University.
His parents, Alice and Reg Hookham, taught him at a young age that hard work, respect for others, honesty and kindness are the keys to success and a fulfilling life.
He started his career as a 19-year-old, answering the phone for Twin City Gas. He worked his way up the ladder through the ranks, retiring in 2001 as District Manager of Union Gas.
Greg always had the respect of his colleagues for his deep knowledge of the gas industry and his no-nonsense approach to business.
After retirement, he spearheaded the western chapter of gas company retirees and met weekly with the “guys” to tell old gas company stories.
Greg believed in a life of serving others. He was chairperson of the Thunder Bay Parking Authority for 15 years. He served as President of the Amethyst Harbour Campers’ Association. He was past master of Connaught Lodge 51 and a member of the Shriners (Khartum). He was a proud Rotarian (Port Arthur) and Children’s Wish fund-raising member. He stepped in when he was needed to lead the Thunder Bay Golf and Country Club.
Greg and Shirley were fortunate to travel to many exciting places in the world, and spent many winters in Florida and Palm Springs, California.
Greg’s favourite place, however, was his cottage at Birch Beach. He cherished sharing special moments with family and good friends.
Watching the grandkids and teaching them great practical skills to last a lifetime was high on the agenda. Hugs and “I love you” were so appreciated.
Greg enjoyed simple pleasures in life — good food, his daily rum and Pepsi with his wife, listening to 60’s music, telling stories over the fence with the neighbours, and firing up the snowblower after a good snowstorm.
Greg was pre-deceased by his first wife Barbara and her mom Eileen Isbester, and his parents Alice and Reg Hookham.
Services for Greg will be held in the Sargent and Son Chapel on Court Street at 11 AM on Monday, October 19th (10 AM – 11 AM Meet and Visitation with Family). Archdeacon Deborah Kraft officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Center at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.sargentandson.com. Those unable to attend in person may do so virtually using the link on Greg’s page on the Sargent & Son Website.
Greg’s loss has left a “hole in our hearts.” We will remember his love, humour and kindness.
We will always love you!
