It is with deep sadness that the family announces the unexpected passing of
Bernard Pawlyk, affectionately known as “Bernie,” who passed away at his home
in Thunder Bay on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born and raised with a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the outdoors,
Bernie began his career at just 19 years of age as a Junior Draftsman with the Land
Surveys Section of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Through hard work and
dedication, he later transferred to the Planning and Design Section, where he built
a respected career before retiring in January 1994 at the age of 54 as Senior Project
Manager.
Although he enjoyed his work, retirement gave him more time to devote to the
things he loved most. Bernie’s greatest joys were found with his family and his
land. He cherished tending to his farm in Paipoonge Township and spending time
at the family camp on Batwing Lake. Whether he was fishing, hunting, or simply
sharing stories over his regular morning coffee with friends, Bernie found
happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He took great pride in the home and camp he
built with his family, a testament to his skill, determination, and independent spirit.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, perseverance, and teaching those
around him the value of hard work.
Bernie will be deeply missed by his wife, Lois, with whom he shared a lifetime of
partnership. He leaves behind his daughters, Lynne Rice (Michael) and Lori Botka
(Tom), and his granddaughter, Katrynne Rice. He is also lovingly remembered by
his sister, Natalie Carpenter; his brother-in-law, Jim Leonard; many nieces and
nephews; special family friends Lauri and Rick Alix; as well as extended family
members and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
The family would also like to express their gratitude to Bernie’s neighbours and
friends for the kindness, care, and companionship they showed him during his final
months. Their support and friendship meant a great deal to Bernie and his family
and will be remembered with sincere appreciation.
He was predeceased by his parents, Sophie and Michael Pawlyk; his mother-in-
law, Appolonia Presenger; his father-in-law, John Presenger; his sister-in-law, Luba
Leonard; and his brother-in-law, Ross Carpenter.
While Bernie’s passing was sudden, the life he lived was full of purpose and love.
His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the memories he created, and the
family he cherished. He will be remembered with love, gratitude, and countless
stories shared around kitchen tables, campfires, and morning coffee.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Bernie’s life on Sunday August
23, 2026, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Slovak Legion Solarium. The celebration
will be an open house gathering, and those who knew Bernie are welcome to join
the family in sharing memories and celebrating his life.
The family extends its sincere thanks to everyone for their kindness, support, and
condolences during this difficult time.
In memory of Bernie and his love for the companion animals that brought joy to
his family, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to
the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society Northwest Animal Centre, or the charity of
your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
