Norma Eileen DuBois

Norma Eileen DuBois passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026 at Hogarth Riverview Manor, surrounded by the love and presence of her daughters.

Norma was born on September 13, 1929, in Port Arthur, ON, to her loving parents, Tyyne (Lindholm) and Yrjo Laine. Growing up, she was surrounded by extended family and had a close relationship with her maternal grandmother, Hilja (Lindholm) Nykanen. Her grandmother’s influence and memory were profound in her life.

Throughout her life, Norma exhibited grace and warmth which was reflected in the love she extended to family, friends, and those in need. Her caring and compassion left a lasting impression on many people.

Norma married the love of her life, Gerald Amie DuBois, on September 22, 1951. While an only child, her life quickly expanded with the large DuBois/Barzaghi/Williamson families. Norma and Gerry’s beautiful friendship and 52-year marriage was a model for all who knew them. Their early lives focused on raising their children and honouring the unique nature and interests of Greg, Gwen, and Gayle.

Together with Gerry, Norma created an environment at home or at their cottage where everyone felt welcome. Norma always greeted people with her infectious smile, warmth, hospitality – and plenty of food and coffee. She enjoyed creating delicious meals and was always trying the latest, healthy recipes.

Norma had a love for nature that was nurtured early in her life through her parents. She found her happy places at her cottage, at Indian Rocks Beach, FL, or in more recent years at the ridge overlooking the Kaministiquia River and Nor’Wester Mountains. She was the most caring “Mama” to her family’s beloved canine and feline pets. Our shelties Nate and Luna deeply miss her.

Norma’s faith was of utmost importance to her. She was a life-long member of Calvary Lutheran Church and valued the special friendships she developed there. It was through this community that Norma and Gerry developed a close, cherished friendship with the Howk family.

Norma’s love of life, Finnish sisu, and spirituality persisted throughout her 96 years. She will be deeply missed by her daughters Gwen DuBois-Wing, Gayle DuBois, and daughter-in-law Marcia (née Curtola). She is survived by her brother-in-law Brian DuBois; sisters-in-law Marilyn Smilski, Marjorie DuBois, Marlene DuBois; and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Norma was predeceased by her husband Gerald; son Greg who provided care for and sadly predeceased her in December 2025; son-in-law Don Wing; parents Tyyne and Yrjo Laine; mother and father-in-law Alice and Amie DuBois; sisters-in-law Eileen Albert, Judy Behman, and Judy DuBois; brothers-in-law, Henry Albert, Ron and Lorne DuBois; Ernie Smilski; and Bob Behman.

In respecting Norma’s wishes, a private family interment will be held later this summer. For those who desire, donations to Grace Place, Salvation Army, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society Northwest, or the charity of your choice are appreciated.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Heather McLean and the wonderful team on 4 North at Hogarth Riverview Manor who cared for Norma over the past 3 months. We also express our deep gratitude to Norma’s primary care physician, Dr. Jane Slivchak who was incredibly caring, listened attentively, and attended to her needs. We are also grateful to our dear family friend, Rev. Hugh Walker, who has walked this journey, honoured our beautiful Mom, and supported us.
