The Nuclear Waste Management Organization says it continues to be busy developing it’s deep underground nuclear waste facilty near Ignace.
Director of Municipal relations and transportation Jamie Matear says actual approvals of the DGR site is years away, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t doing anything.
“There’s a lot of other things…there’s shallow bore holes, seismic testing, there’s socio-economic work that the groups are involved with,” Matear told Kenora City council at its Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.
“I think that when I talked to my colleagues in Ignace last week…all the different teams that are working…60 individual contractors doing work out in the field right now.”
Matear adds even though approvals for the DGR are still years away, they are doing their due diligence.
“We’re actually doing work in the area now. It’s called Details Site Characterization, so a lot of work is actually continuing. We’re drilling four new bore holes. Total cost all in, bore hole drilling, testing, storage of material…$20 million each.”
The NWMO plans to update the work on its Deep Underground Repository at an open house in Thunder Bay on Thursday at the Italian Cultural Center on Algoma Street from 2 pm until 8 pm.
