Thunder Bay District: Flood warning issued by Lakehead Region Conservation Authority

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has upgraded a flood watch to a flood waring for much of the Thunder Bay area.

Thunder Bay, Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion are under the watch.

The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority advises that between 30 to 50 millimetres of precipitation has been recorded in area gauges as of 9:30 p.m.

Additional precipitation is forecasted overnight with the potential for thunderstorms.

According to the LRCA, area watercourses have risen rapidly in response to the rainfall and are anticipated to continue to rise overnight into Tuesday.

Flooded roads have been reported in the Townships of O’Connor and Gillies.

The public is advised to pay attention to their surroundings and motorists are cautioned to exercise caution during their morning commute and to never drive through a flooded road.

A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is occurring or imminent.

Authority staff will continue to monitor conditions as part of its flood forecasting and warning program.

The warning is in place until 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Natural Resources put its own Flood Watch in place for the Thunder Bay Ignace MNR District for Monday as well.
