From this morning’s “TODAY IN THE BAY”:
If you’ve been out for a walk recently, have you seen this? People walking BACKWARDS?
Videos and tutorials about walking backwards are now showing up on social media pages / Tik Tok / You Tube. Apparently…it’s been a “thing” since the 1940’s….and was popular back in the 80’s – and is now catching on again.
Kinesiology professors in Nevada are now sharing the benefits of “walking backwards”. Backward motion strengthens muscles that forward motion doesn’t. There’s less impact on joints……..it increases flexibility and can actually help with back pain / and posture. If you have foot problems, ankle issues, knee problems, even hip issues – walking backwards can alleviate this.
It’s like being on an elliptical that has both forward and backward motion. Obviously – they suggest you only do this for a short time while on a regular walk. Would you do it? (I enjoy my daily walks – but you would never catch me walking backwards. LOL. How awkward would this be – when you’re passing someone?)
