Legislation Protects Tenants Against Eviction

If you are worried about paying rent, a new law in Ontario is meant to help you.

Legislation was given royal assent Wednesday, which will increase fines for landlords caught unlawfully evicting tenants from an apartment or house who are having problems paying rent during the pandemic.

The law also requires more negotiation between tenants and landlords to find a solution.

Fines for individual landlords will go up to $50,000, while corporations will face a bill of $250,000.
