The organization which oversees social service’s in the region is announcing over $350,000 in funding to help the homeless get food within its jurisdiction.
In the immediate Thunder Bay area, the District Social Service’s Administration Board provided the money to seven programs run by six groups.
The biggest single contribution through the Food Security Fund is $120,000 for Shelter House in Thunder Bay.
Other groups in the area getting funding include The Gathering Place, the Rural Cupboard Food Bank, The Salvation Army Food Bank and Soup Van, the Northwestern Women’s Centre, and Our Kids Count.

Gathering Place, to provide weekly food hamper distribution in the City of Thunder Bay $ 13,720
Greenstone Harvest, to provide monthly food assistance in the Municipality of Greenstone $ 4,000
Marjorie House, to provide provides food security workshops and assistance to women who are connected with the shelter in Marathon $ 18,396
Marathon Collective, to provide emergency food security assistance in Marathon, Heron Bay, and Biigtigong Nishnaabeg $ 8,500
Northshore Harvest, to provide emergency food for those in need in the communities of Jackfish, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Rossport and Pays Plat $ 25,860
Rural Cupboard Food Bank, to provide emergency food assistance to those in need for the communities of Conmee, Gillies, Gorham, Kaministiquia,
Neebing, Nolalu, O’Connor, Oliver Paipoonge, Upsala, Jacques, and the Territories without Municipal Organization $ 40,000
Salvation Army Food Bank, to provide monthly food hamper distribution in the City of Thunder Bay $ 27,043
Salvation Army Soup Van, to provide daily hot meals to people in need of food assistance in the City of Thunder Bay $ 25,000
Shelter House, to expand capacity to provide meals to people experiencing homelessness in the City of Thunder Bay $124,135
Northwestern Women’s Centre (Good Food Box), to provide low-cost fresh fruit and vegetables monthly in the City of Thunder Bay $ 31,500
