Chamber President Happy With Government Supports

The Chamber of Commerce says businesses are getting some relief from some new government measures during the pandemic.

President Charla Robinson says the options like banks offering interest-free emergency business loans are a big help.

Businesses usually submit G.S.T. and H.S.T. payments every month, so Robinson says leaving that money in business owners’ pockets for now provides a lifeline.

“Which is, again, another significant support for business to be able to access the funds they need without worrying about how the interest costs are going to be negatively impactful to their business,” Robinson adds.

She says the Chamber has been speaking with business owners this week, and many are worried about their ability to stay afloat with “significantly different” revenue levels.

The Chamber President is also a fan of an increase to business wage subsidy, and delaying sales tax payments until June.

Robinson says the wage subsidy going from 10 percent to 75 percent is a significant move for small and medium sized businesses.

“To allow them to keep their employees on the payroll, regardless of the level of revenues that are coming in from sales and that sort of thing. So this is really a positive thing,” she says.

The Chamber president is hoping for a little more clarity on the matter on Monday.
