A recent survey by the online realty company Zoocasa shows Thunder Bay has the second-highest tax rate in the province.
That comes as no surprise to Chamber of Commerce President Charla Robinson.
She says it is something the chamber has been saying since 2014 when it released its report on municipal taxation which indicated much the same thing.
However, Robinson admits the situation is improving noting, during this year’s budget discussions “there was a lot of conversation (by councillors) around the affordability…of taxation in Thunder Bay as they were making decisions.”
Mayor Bill Mauro, however, is quick to point out just because we have the second-highest tax rate, doesn’t mean you pay the second-highest taxes.
Mauro notes, if you compare a bungalow here with a similar bungalow in one of Ontario’s other 29 cities with 100,000 people or more, we rank 15th out of 29.
