The head coach of the Lakehead University women’s basketball team is optimistic for the growth of the sport after the Toronto Raptors won the NBA championship.
Jon Kriener says this in spite of hockey considered Canada’s sport.
“Basketball is a sport that’s cheaper to play, and it’s a sport that is pretty big right now in the world. And it’s the fastest growing sport in Canada, from what I’ve read.”
The head coach adds it’s difficult to tell whether Kawhi Leonard will stay or leave Toronto, in spite of the support shown to him.
He adds the Raptors’ journey to the final was all the team could talk about.
“This year with our camps going on, all the kids wearing the Raptors stuff, and they’re all talking about that. It’s kinda cute watching the little ones, we have the little 3 to 5 year olds, you know, wearing their Raptor jerseys.”
Many players of Lakehead University men’s basketball team together watched the Raptors win.
Head coach Ryan Thomson tells us there’s definitely a lesson to be learned from the game.
“The perseverance of the Raptors, and you know, the way they stuck together even when they had a couple of bad games, or, a little bit of adversity throughout the year. I think that’s the most we can take from this.”
The LU head coach adds the Raptors are the favourite team of most of the players, many watching the team while growing up.
