PCs Scrapping Basic Income Pilot Project

The Ford government is putting the axe to another one of the former Liberal government’s programs.

The PCs say they are winding down the Basic Income pilot project in order to focus on introducing their own plan, much to the disappointment of local anti-poverty activist Bonnie Krysowaty who calls it a “tough blow”

Until a formal plan is drawn up, the government says current Ontario works and Ontario Disability Support Program recipients are getting an across-the-board increase of 1.5 per cent.

Krysowaty believes that’s not enough of an increase, claiming in order to raise people out of poverty, rates would have to go up about 40 per cent.
