Contact talks between the union representing Catholic teachers and the Ontario government have broken down again.
The two sides resumed meetings Monday, with the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association suspending planned strike action. But president Liz Stuart says the province’s bargaining team held firm to its agenda to take resources out of the classroom. Stuart says now waiting on the mediator to decide if further negotiations would be worthwhile.
Meanwhile, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is upping its job action. Beginning Wednesday, public elementary teachers won’t be taking on any additional workload, including not filling in for absences normally done by occasional teachers and education workers. Teachers also won’t be spending their own money on classroom supplies.
ETFO is also giving the province until March 6 to reach a deal before it considers further job action.
Thunder Bay’s two French schools, La Verendrye and Franco-Superior, will be having a one day strike on Thursday in protest. The union, the AEFO, says it will also affect French language schools across the region right through to Dryden.
