New City Bridge Opens At Confederation College

After several years of work, the City and Confederation College’s new bridge over the McIntyre River is open.

The provincial government announced in April of 2016 they would be putting $325,000 towards the new structure, something Mayor Bill Mauro is pleased the previous provincial government provided.

“A nice partnership between the city and the Province of Ontario. Just keeping people active, allowing them to safely travel between different points between the city whether they are walking, jogging or cycling. Another piece of recreational/mobility infrastructure for the city, which is really good for the City of Thunder Bay.”

The McIntyre River Multi-Use Bridge is a major river crossing for north-south travel and will connect existing trails from the Harbour Expressway to the college.

Director of Engineering Kayla Dixon tells us the structure is a welcome addition to those who are active in our community.

“This bridge provides a safe connection now for that north-south commuter and recreational traffic on the trail. We used to have those pedestrians and cyclists in combination with the vehicles, and now this bridge separates them.”

At the time this project was announced the city was expected to provide $235,000 towards it.
