Flag raising at city hall launches Pride Month in Thunder Bay

Pride Month was kicked off in Thunder Bay with a flag raising and proclamation at Thunder Bay City Hall.

This year’s main event, the Pride Parade and Festival, will actually take place in July.

This year’s Pride theme is: All In For Love: Global Pride, Infinite Friendship.

There are still many events scheduled through the month of June, with more information on the way.

“There is a wonderful community calendar that we’re still working on and trying to update as frequently as we can,” explained Thunder Pride Board Chair Scotia-leigh Kauppi. “As everyone knows, Thunder Bay loves pride, and there’s always so many different community events.”

Mayor Ken Boshcoff was on hand for the launch event and re-proclaimed June Pride Month in Thunder Bay.

Vendor signups for the festival are still open, and they can be found by clicking here.

“The level of support here is by none like what many other towns and cities our size in the region ever see, it’s so important, and we just love seeing how much support we have here,” added Kauppi. “Thunder Bay is its own little microcosm of like a really welcoming, safe space for everyone.

The Pride Parade is also expanding in size following a strong reception in 2024.

“The outpouring of support for the parade to return is why it’s coming back again this year with a longer route and you know, a more accessible route for folks to participate in,” said Rainbow Collective Co-Founder Jason Veltri.

“This is the kickoff to Pride Month it shows that we are one as a community standing together, raising the colours, saying that hate has no home in our backyard here in Thunder Bay and that diversity and inclusion is valued as a part of this city, not only here at City Hall, but across from current river to Westfort.”
