Ontario investing over $8 million to support infrastructure along Central Avenue

Thunder Bay is receiving another boost to its Central Avenue Development Lands Initiative.

The province is investing $8.64 million through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing Stream.

The funding will improve road and trail networks along Central Avenue.

“This funding highlights the strong partnership between our city and the province, helping us address our housing challenges and unlock our city’s potential for growth,” said Mayor Ken Boshcoff. “Thunder Bay is committed to building more homes and fostering vibrant, connected neighbourhoods. The Central Avenue corridor improvements will not only unlock vital housing opportunities but also strengthen our economy and infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable roadways and active transportation corridors for future generations.”

In September, the city announced the project and a $10,402,500 investment to support the construction of more than 1,200 homes in the area.

Road and trail network improvements are part of the initiative.

Located between Golf Links Road and Balmoral Street, this development area will benefit from significant infrastructure upgrades to prepare 100 acres of land for residential construction.

The city also announced it plans on opening public engagement on the project at some point early this year.
